When it comes to trains, Small City's motto has always been 'go small or go home'. Last year we ran an article about Wester Pickston Miniature Railway just outside of Perth and quite frankly people went nuts over it (you can read it here). That got us thinking, what if the trains were even smaller? Well, the Perth & District Model Railway Club held its 27th annual exhibition this Saturday at Dewars Centre, so we thought we would find out.
The thing about really tiny trains is you can get quite a lot of them in an ice rink, so when we initially arrived we were overwhelmed by the selection of model trains and railways on offer. There was everything from breathtaking mountaintop passes in Switzerland to a lovingly crafted homage to the Welsh Cambrian line circa 1908. The engines themselves ranged from steam and diesel to electric, and the gauges range from HOm to 00n3. To be honest, I have no idea what that means but I threw it in for any model railway enthusiasts that might be reading!
What really struck us as we walked around the exhibits was the painstaking attention to detail from the tiny chickens actually pecking the ground on a German farm to a working carousel at a fair near Llwyn Grug station. The best exhibitions are like a pic into the tiny little model citizens life. Like the couple cuddling in Greig MacKenzie's sea-side scene at a Cumbrian sea-side resort or a hapless Elmer Fudd-esque hunter getting outwitted in Barrowmore MRG's Cambrian railway.
About the Photographer
Jo Gostling is an animal lover who got into snapping almost by accident. She often accompanies her boyfriend Colin (our live music reviewer) to gigs and he began to realise that the picture's she took on her high-end camera phone were better than those he was taking on his DSLR. As a result, Small City reviews (and increasingly our galleries) are now often accompanied by her awesome pics.
