This February we sent our new live music reviewer, Colin McSloy, to his first assignment reviewing local band An Orange Conspiracy at The Twa Tam's and he had a blast. Ever since then he has covered gigs all over gigs at venues large and small all over Perthshire and although previous his photographic experience only extended to taking the odd selfie he has come to love taking snaps of musicians in action. In this weeks gallery, Colin has selected his favourite photo's from the many shows he has attended.
It's been a hell of a year for music in Perthshire with the iconic Southern Fried Festival celebrating its tenth year (Colin checked out Andy Fairweather Low) and both the Solas and Craigie Hill Festival fast becoming fixtures on the Perth music scene. Colin also enjoyed more intimate gigs at Inchyra (Hunter and the Bear), The Green Room (Majik Carpet and Lizard McGee) and was lucky enough to catch a night of stovies and roots music at Perth Museum featuring Small City favourite Dave Low.
Two of Colin's favourite gigs were at the Salutation Hotel which hosted Southern Fried's after house sessions including the amazing king of twang Doug Seeger and also hosted acclaimed singer-songwriter, Ben Maggs, not once but twice. Gigs at the Birnam Arts centre saw Small City Sloy venture out of the city limits most notably to see the amazing Perth punk band Brainglue support The View.
However, Colin's absolute highlight of the year was seeing one of the best live bands in the World Hayseed Dixie at an absolutely jumping Gig Room on a Monday night. Not only where the band very happy to be photographed up close but Mandolin player Joe Hymashy even gave our intrepid reporter a swally of his Buckfast and his single malt Laphroaig. What a gent!
