Nicki was out and about this weekend, enjoying all of the amazing activities and sports that ran across the area. From a meet & greet with an Olympian, to the wonderful Keepsafe Perth 10K it was jam-packed even before we all sang out #IAmTeamGB.
FRIDAY 26th AUGUST
Not since Perth Leisure Pool opened in 1988 have I witnessed queues like the ones I did last Friday night. Forget flumes for the first time, this event saw everyone from toddlers to grandads beaming with joy. I'm talking of course about Stephen Milne, our Olympic hero, and his debut local appearance since he won THAT Silver medal in the Rio Games. Stephen, his wonderful coach of ten years, Ann Dickson and the entire Perth City Swim Club were meeting up at Perth Leisure Pool.
Knowing how much his achievement has meant to all of us, Stephen offered to stick around and do selfies with local kids who might be interested in a wee look at the medal. It would be fair to say, the response was AMAZING and as the press call turned into crowd control for this PR girl, you could almost taste the excitement in the room. Of course, Stephen's loyalty and genuine love of his pool and club meant that he was only too happy to stick around for the two hours it took to get through the photo requests, autographs and countless wishes of congratulations. A wonderful heartlifting way to spend a Friday evening.
SATURDAY 27th AUGUST
The #IAmTeamGB National Sports Day saw the sun shine in Perth and alongside our Olympic Medal Winner, there were hundreds of you came out in force to join in the FREE day of swimming and sportshalls.
Across all areas of Perth and Kinross, people waved the flag for sports and celebrated our amazing athletes. The atmosphere in all venues was fantastic and as we tagged along with Stephen we discovered that everyone - not just the swimmers - was proud of this homegrown hero.
We kicked off at parkrun on the North Inch. It's one we love and highly recommend! From there we headed to North Inch Campus for the excellent Perth and Kinross Disability Sports session before heading to Live Active Letham for a twirl with the magnificent Letham Majorettes! (We're all in agreement though that Stephen should stick to the swimming!)
SUNDAY 28th AUGUST
For the first year the Keepsafe Perth 10K had it's Live Active Leisure Kids Fun Run events. The sun shone down on the 360 adult runners who came out to take part and we were delighted to see that alongside these regular runners, over 100 children joined in the children’s Live Active Leisure 1.5K and 3K Fun Runs. Iain Jordan and Emily Gilmore were the first boy and girl over the line for the 1.5K with Daniel Bruce and Skye Marshall leading the way in the 3K.
