Panto season is in full swing (oh yes it is!) in Perth, and Horsecross’s production of Dick McWhittington at the Concert Hall is packed with audiences arriving ready to boo, hiss and cheer their way through some madcap mahem!
This year’s spectacular, which runs until 26th December, is from the same team that brought you Beauty and the Beast, writer Alan McHugh and director Ian Grieve. They’ve delivered a brilliant production filled with all the traditional panto humour, plenty of nonsense, high jinks and laughs galore.
The super talented cast features some Fair City favourites including Perth’s regular dame Barrie Hunter, Amybeth Littlejohn (Beauty and the Beast, Sleeping Beauty), Helen Mackay (Cinderella) and Harry Ward (Beauty and the Beast). Stuart Watson also returns as musical director and John Winchester makes his Perth stage debut in the lead role of Dick McWhittington. They've been busy in rehearsals for months and are finally getting to show off all their hard work!
The story has been beautifully adapted for Perth, and there’s a good dose of local humour and references. Queen Rat plays the baddie brilliantly, commanding her rodent army who are swarming all over Perth. Dick himself, on his way to London to find X-Factor fame and fortune (welcome to a 21st century panto!), is oblivious of his destiny to save the city and it’s up to his fairy godmother, the Imp of The Inches, to bring him back. No panto would be complete without a love story and along the way Melody Marshmallow falls for the charms of Dick.
Dick McWhittington has all your favourite panto elements; a pantomime dame with an air of desperation to get a man, outlandish costumes, jokes for the kids (and more than a few for the adults!) and a good old sing off! The sets are colourful and dramatic, the musicians impressive, and the young cast members incredibly talented.
