As lockdown eases and doors swing open to welcome us back into real life, there is a new appreciation for the things that really matter.
Friends and family, slowing down and making time to simply enjoy the moment have all gone straight to the top of our much shorter 'to-do-lists'. And with our priorities changing, it was inevitable that Perthshire's fabulous independent businesses would find a solution to our new, easier pace of life.
Enter Scott and Penny Edwards of the award-winning Parklands Hotel! A firm favourite on Perth's hospitality scene for many years (check out our article from last year), they've mixed their vast experience with a warm, friendly welcome and gorgeous surroundings to bring us the newly-opened Parklands Pub.
Friends and family, slowing down and making time to simply enjoy the moment have all gone straight to the top of our much shorter 'to-do-lists'Situated in the lush green surroundings of their terraced beer garden, this is the afternoon out you've been craving all lockdown! Think grown up drinks, gourmet snacks and the relaxed, laid back vibe usually reserved for lazy days in the holiday sun.
Scott explains their decision to relax into a new pace of service for summer 2020.
"There's no denying lockdown has been tough for everyone but I do think it has allowed people to reasses what's important to them. Making time to see friends and family, slowing down a little and simply enjoy the moment have all gone straight to the top of our much shorter 'to-do-lists'.
"We wanted to offer our customers a chance to do that here at Parklands. The Beer Graden and Pub idea came to us while we were planning how we'd keep our customers safe as lockdown began to ease.
"Our Terrace Menu has always been popular during the summer months but we felt it was a little formal. We wanted to bring that laid-back, continental vibe to the garden, somewhere you can sit and enjoy a glass of rose and a pint, maybe have a bar snack or two and while away a couple of hours.
"Its what we'd want to do on a day off and what our friends who have been missing Perth city centre have been craving. We've also had a few people come up to visit family, booking a spot in the garden and then staying the night at the hotel now that we're open. We're really pleased at the response so far."
Scott and Penny moved into the hotel at the beginning of lockdown to ensure they could continue to offer accomodation for key workers. It has been a long 5 months without their much-appreacited team and Scott is looking forward to having everyone back together again.
"It was really tough for everyone. Like most businesses we had to make hard decisions quickly to ensure the long-term resilience of the business. Furloughing our team was really difficult to do but it was a neccessary part of keeping us going. Adapt and survive as they say.
Our key worker customers have been brilliant, and we've had such good feedback on things like the Breakfast Bag"Our key worker customers have been brilliant, and we've had such good feedback on things like the Breakfast Bag - which was added as a safety measure - that we're going to keep it going now that we're reopen to tourists and short break visitors to Perth.
Although he and Penny made it through, with happy customers and a few new ideas along the way, Scott is looking forward to easing back into some of their traditional
"The first of the team returned last week and it was a really emotional moment for us all. I think our resiience and abaility to adapt when we needed it speaks volumes about the service, loyalty and reputation that our team has helped us to build.
"We're feeling incredibly positive about what Parkalnds can offer locally and for visitors to the area and look forward to seeing everyone again for a beer in the garden, a wine on the terrace and a socially-distanced warm welcome!"
