You will have heard, I’m sure, that Perth is currently bidding to become the UK City of Culture 2021. Last Sunday, the day after the Perth Christmas Lights Switch On, saw over 30 culture ‘Clans’ from across Perth and Kinross come together in support of the bid for a Community Celebration Day. They performed in twelve different venues, from Perth Museum and the Fair Maid’s House to temporary outdoor stages such as the one on Horsecross Plaza outside the Concert Hall and even a story telling Yurt set up on the High Street.
The Small City team were there, weaving in amongst the crowds, soaking up the atmosphere and enjoying the vibrant mix of people, cultures, groups and individuals showing off their talents. Workshops, spoken word, food & drink stalls, live music and demonstrations gave people from all walks of life a chance to come together in support of Perth’s bid for UK City of Culture 2021.
There was also a presence from members of PKAVS Minority Communities Hub and The Learning Curve who came forward in large numbers wishing to celebrate and share their talents; everything from Bollywood dancing to Polish beatboxing, Tiffany glass painting to decoupage.
The Grand Finale saw all clans gather on stage for a mass group performance which took our breath away. We stood there watching, at a time when the whole world feels like it’s gone crazy (thanks largely to two idiotic blonde men) and a thought crossed our mind; it’s so refreshing to be part of something big, beautiful and united in a celebration of our people, places, culture, history and future, not to mention it being the ultimate #PerthLoveFest
Our Small City with the Big Personality has always been a meeting place: a crossing point where generations, cultures and creativity come together, making connections and bringing positive change.
With thanks to Fraser Band for the beautiful images.
