Rab Shields and Stephen Clarke are personal trainers like no others. They promise to change your life with their non-arsey (is that even a phrase?) approach to exercise, diet and wellbeing. Together have spent the last 12 years getting their clients in Perth fitter, stronger and leaner. However as well as their flesh and blood clients, they also have a growing fanbase on their YouTube channel The Kilted Coaches.
It is here where they post vids about fitness, nutrition, mindset and psychology plus a whole bunch of other shenanigans. However, they are not just internet famous as they have also been featured on Buzzfeed, Channel Four and now Small City Big Personality and next they have their sights set on conquering America. We had a chat with the lads to find out about their work and what they do with their spare time. Hint: it involves a wee dram of Whisky!
What does a typical day at work look like for you?
We’re usually up at 5 am to work with Personal Training clients from 6.30am until 1 pm. In the afternoons we film videos for our Kilted Coaches YouTube Channel in locations around Perthshire and across Scotland. Two days a week we also coach our online clients who are all over the world but mainly in the U.S.
What signals the start of your weekend/days off?
We host a live show for Youtube every Friday night at 10 pm (so it’s a suitable time for our U.S audience). The start of this show usually signifies our weekend because we pour ourselves a whisky while chatting to our audience – not a bad way to kick off the weekend!
What might people be surprised to know about you?
We are not what most Personal Trainers PRETEND to be. We drink whisky and even the odd beer. We don’t count our calories or weigh our food. Stephen has a dairy intolerance but LOVES Ice cream and Rab can and will eat anything if you challenge him to do so or say he can’t do it.
Stephen has a dairy intolerance but LOVES Ice cream!
Top of your bucket list?
To host a 3-day event in Las Vegas where we can coach some of our U.S clients face-to-face. One day we’d love to make this dream a reality!
Worst job you’ve ever had?
Pizza Delivery guy (Stephen)
Egg Factory worker (Rab)
Who or what inspires you?
Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Tell us about the weekend you’d love to live again?
Our wedding Weekends. (To our wives not to each other)
What’s the best part of your job?
When we get emails and comments saying that we have literally changed someone’s life for the better. In some cases, people have claimed that we have literally saved their lives through our videos and coaching.
What’s in the perfect day off breakfast?
Steak in a bowl.
Complete this sentence; the best things in life are….
Making others happy whether that be our kids, our friends or our clients.
