Happy International Women’s Day, everyone! This important day is celebrated on the 8th of March every year around the globe, and dates back to the early 1900’s. Across the world this is both a day of celebration and protest, and a day to unite in solidarity with women from all walks of life, all over the world!
In honour of this day, we’ve put together a round-up of some bad-ass, female-centred content on our site – from events going on in Perth today, to podcasts, features and more! Get ready to get inspired, connected and engaged – this one’s for all the amazing women out there (yes – you!!!).
This is a day to unite in solidarity with women from all walks of life.
We couldn't have an article about International Women's Day without mentioning the fantastic Perth Women's Festival, which returns for it's fifth year this year! Organised by the fantastic women at BeYourself - who have been organising celebrations for International Women's Day in Perth since 1997! - there are plenty of events going on today around Perth - from performance art at Threshold Artspace, to a talk on 100 years siince some women got the vote in Britain, to conversation cafe's around women's experiences within the criminal justice system and more, make sure to check out our event listing for all the information you need!
Perth Women's Collective are a new group in Perth providing a meeting space for women to collaborate, share stories, and make friends. There are also speakers who drop in to share their expertise and experiences from various fields - past speakers have included Peggy Brunache, food historian and archaeologist, and Kirsty Lunn, founder of body positive underwear company, Molke! We chatted to co-ordinator Becca McLune to find out more and how you can get involved too!
The Snash With Jennie Cook – is a brilliant podcast about women, made in Scotland. Jennie is a radio presenter, podcaster, DJ, voice over artist, workshop facilitator and events host. In this episode, Jennie chats to Samina Ansari, C.E.O of Amina, Muslim Women’s Resource Centre about her experiences of Islamophobia and microaggressions that she's faced, why she wears the hijab, and how her feminism intersects with her faith. Check it out here.
The world's ONLY Menopause Festival returns to Perth for the second year at Perth Theatre this April. Returning bigger and better with presentations, marketplace, creative workshops and panel discussions, we can't wait! Come along, have fun and help break the menopause taboo. Oh - and look out for Nicki's interview with Menopause Festival founder, Rachel Weiss, coming next week!
Based on the real-life activist group, 'Glasgow Girls' follows seven young pupils at Drumchapel High School as they take a stand against the detention and subsequent imminent deportation of their friend Agnesa, and her family. It's life-affirming, brilliant, and has some incredible tunes too - what more can you want for?! Check out my review of it here (as you can tell, I really enjoyed it!!).
