If I was to pick one thing that I loved about Perth, food would definitely be a top contender. Perth and wider Perthshire is a food lover’s delight with a vast range of delicious locally grown produce, award winning chefs and fab cafes and restaurants.
In my humble (for humble, read greedy) opinion There’s nothing better than enjoying a good meal with great company and a nice glass (or three) of wine.
Now that I’ve declared my love of food it’ll come as no surprise to learn that I can’t wait to see the recipes Gill has rustled up every week. So, when I spotted the delicious Rack of Lamb with Dauphinoise Potatoes from Uisge Restaurant a few months ago, I mentally earmarked this beautiful, (still fairly new) restaurant nestled in the Perthshire countryside. Pronounced 'oosh–ghe' (it’s Gaelic for water), it was the perfect setting for dinner with Ally on a cold Saturday night.
Arriving in Murthly we were impressed from the outset. The restaurant looks absolutely stunning, with tall windows and fairy lights draped and twinkling outside. We were warmly greeted by Laura who showed us to our table which was located at the window and had superb views of the countryside towards Birnam Hill.
The interior has been designed to maximise light with tall windows around the room and ceiling glass to bathe the interior with a beautiful glow. There was a log burning stove flickering away in the corner and we spent the first few minutes just looking around and admiring the views before we even picked up the menu!
The choice on the menu is fantastic - not great for someone who struggles to make a decision! I went with Laura's recommendation of the pork and red onion terrine served with apple and grape compote and Ally opted for Chargrilled Halloumi on a tomato and red onion chutney with pesto and micro herbs.
The terrine was meaty and flavoursome, perfect slathered on the oatcakes with the sweet-but-sharp apple and grape compote. Ally was suitably impressed with his starter and in the interests of a full review I stabbed my fork on his plate steal a bite before he ate it all! The halloumi was perfectly chargrilled and was a lovely addition to the dressed salad with the sweet tomato relish and nutty pesto.
For the main event I opted for the venison and Ally went for the pork and black pudding. My eyes lit up when I was presented with five thick slices of perfectly pink venison on a bed of buttered cabbage. This was served with a side of carrots and a crispy black pepper and pear potato, topped off with a drizzle of red wine glaze.
The vension was cooked to perfection and my knife cut through the tender meat like butter. The richness of the meat and red wine glaze was perfectly matched with the buttery cabbage and peppery potatoes and I washed it down with a glass of the tasty house red wine.
Despite feeling as though we couldn’t eat one more bite, one look at the dessert menu and we couldn’t resist. After swithering on whether we would share a dessert or get one each, greed took over and we ordered a sticky toffee pudding and a dark chocolate mousse with berry ice cream.
If you’ve got a sweet tooth then the sticky toffee is the choice for you. It was everything you would expect and more. The vanilla ice cream from nearby Stewart Tower Dairy was the perfect accompaniment and despite feeling fit to burst I managed every last deliciously sweet spoonful.
From the impeccable service to the scrumptious food we couldn’t fault our experience at Uisge. However, one thing I would recommend is that you book in advance. We went along at 6.30pm and during our visit it filled up pretty quickly; when we paid the bill there wasn't an empty table in the restaurant!
If you like good food in a cosy atmosphere you’ll love Uisge. The portions were generous, the prices affordable and we can’t wait to show off this fantastic restaurant to all our friends and family.
