They don’t ‘Crom’ much kinder than this! Small City indie band The Crom is donating all proceeds from their catchy debut single to local mental health charity Andy’s Man Club.
Having formed just last year, the Perth rockers first single ‘Why’ became available to buy earlier this month and is now downloadable from all major platforms.
And instead of pocketing the proceeds, The Crom will be handing over a cheque to the Perth branch of Andy’s Man Club which promotes suicide prevention through support for men over 18.
After asking their Facebook fans which Perth charity they’d like to see the band support with the single’s release, the overwhelming response was for Andy’s Man Club.
“It feels great to have released our single and everyone’s been so supportive of us,” says lead singer Alan Sweeney who wrote ‘Why’. “But these are tough times we’re living in and there’re a lot of bad things happening. If we can help give others a hand with our music, we’re really happy to do so!” We’re not in it for the money we just want to make music and try to do some good
Named The Crom after growing up on Cromlix Road in Perth, Alan, alongside brother Frankie Sweeney and fellow bandmates Joel Robertson and Mike Taylor have been making music for years, only coming together as a four piece last September.
And as Alan explains, all members have jobs out with the band – from train driving to plant engineering – so the pressure is off them in terms of trying to hit the big time.
“When you’re younger and in bands, it’s easy to get quite obsessed with fame and all that comes with it. Now the pressure’s off, it’s just great to have the time to write and make music. I think that’s why after years of being in bands and gigging all over the country and writing, this is my first single – I’ve just been much more relaxed about the process. We’re not in it for the money we just want to make music and try to do some good.”
Influenced by the sounds of the Beatles, the Jam and the Arctic Monkeys, Alan describes the band’s style as indie rock and his own song-writing as observational. With plans to release more material as singles, the foot-tapping debut single ‘Why’ will be available to buy for a month, check it out here.
As for the guys at Andy’s Man Club, well they’re thrilled by the Perth band’s generosity. “A huge shout out to the lads of The Crom who are supporting AMC,” they said. “Not only is it helping raise funds for AMC but more importantly its raising awareness and challenging the stigmas surrounding mental health and encouraging people to talk.

“Without local support from the guys and from everyone within the city of Perth, AMC Perth wouldn’t be as big a brotherhood as they are and this is priceless when trying to give guys a safe space to come on a Monday and help each other through their storms. All monies donated to AMC go on opening new clubs and supporting existing clubs with tea, coffee and flyers.”
After hearing a lot about the need for more kindness as a nation recently, we don’t think it gets much better than this. The Crom, we wish you all the luck with your new single!
