The party people, live music revellers, diners, drinkers and lovers of the craic are all waving goodbye this weekend to one of Perth’s great Pub institutions. Pauline Marshall – Poltastic, Pol, thon mad wifie fae Greyfriars – hands over the reins of Greyfriars Bar on Sunday night and heads for the hills! What are we to do I hear you cry? Well, fear not, because the hill we’re referencing is Craigie Hill Golf Club so she’s only actually a wee taxi ride away!
Pauline has stood at the helm of Greyfriars Bar for the past fifteen years and has seen the highs and lows of the pub trade in Perth City Centre. Well known for her larger than life welcome and fiercely good craic, Pauline is cut from the old-school cloth of bar management. Keep everyone smiling and having a good time and you’ll win their hearts and loyalty. She is renowned for her love of live music and apart from stalking actual real-life, international superstars (Wheatus famously drank a bottle of Greyfriars Whisky on stage after being gifted it by the woman herself) she has successfully turned one of the smallest pubs in town into a live music hotbed of amazing Scottish talent.
You might have guessed Pauline is in fact my friend, and it may arouse your suspicions into my lack of bias and journalistic integrity. Well, you’d be right! I am biased, but I’m also a girl who falls into the Party People category and I loved every minute of my old pal’s time in this fabulous wee pub. I have sat at the bar enjoying a blether, pulled pints on a Saturday night, danced until I’ve been ready to drop and laughed until my sides hurt.
Warm, friendly and with just the right level of nonsense and fun, she has breathed life into every night, lunchtime and Saturday afternoon for the past decade and a half. I met RG sitting in Greyfriars, I made friends I still have and my memories, like many, are nothing but happy.
In true music loving style, Pauline will go out with a bang at the end of Southern Fried Festival’s weekend of Amerciana, Blue Grass and Soul music. Hosting a variety of events throughout
the weekend, including the famous Greyfriars Open Mic Sunday hosted by Gav Munro of Red Pine Timber Co., The Carolways and an amazing Country-Oke session that will give singers the chance to sing their favourite song with Stuart Nisbet and Andy May as their band, this is a leaving party worthy of Perth’s First Lady of Live Music!
Of course, its really more of an excuse for a big party than anything else as Pauline opens the doors of Craigie Hill on Tuesday 4th August. She has lined up the same amazing talent for her Saturday Night Live Music Sessions up at the golf club and is open to all!
“All of my Greyfriars regulars are welcome – it’s not just for members! I’m opening on Tuesday 5th but my BIG official opening session will be on 15th August with Lady Miss Emma launching us into Live Saturdays in Craigie and The Mad Ferrets following her on Saturday 27th! I can’t wait!
We’ll also be doing all of our favourite nights so Retro Games night will come with us and we’ve also got the bonus of enough room for a pool table and a darts board. You’d have had someone’s eye out if we’d tried that in Friars!
Kerry, Blue, Alba, Natasha, Katie and Tom are all coming with me and we’ll be doing our Greyfriars Favourite bar lunches to kick things off before we start on evening meals later in the year. We’re also doing early morning breakfast rolls and teas and coffees for the golfers which of course, will be a whole new audience for us.
But it’s like we always said in Greyfriars, there are no strangers, only friends we’ve yet to meet.”
Pauline would love to see you in Greyfriars over the weekend and looks forward to welcoming you to Craigie Hill Golf Club from Tuesday 4th August.
