I’ve been a big fan of former big personality Rae Peacock for many years. In fact, I used to go to his old salon in Glasgow long before he came back home to ‘roost’ so to speak in Perth (yes, I did just make that pun). They recently moved into shiny new premises at 1 York Place, giving them the much needed room to expand their boutique salon after less than 2 years in business.
The move has also provided the opportunity for them to now offer more services, and I went along to check out their new range of skincare treatments. Rae’s salon was the first in Scotland to exclusively offer hair products from Davines (pronounced da-vee-ness), which are organic, vegan and paraben/animal testing free. It made sense then to use the luxury spa skincare range from Davines’ sister company, [Comfort Zone], when they started offering treatments. The [Comfort Zone] products all have delicate but gorgeous scents; think camomile, vanilla and neroli.
Let me say at this point I can be a bit sceptical when successful businesses decide to offer ‘add ons’ (when my old laundrette started offering massages I decided to wash my sheets elsewhere!). However, I am pleased to say that Rae has found the perfect partnership, and is offering the treatments both as a stand-alone service and something you can combine with getting your hair done.
They have really invested in their staff at Rae Peacock’s, and the beauty treatments are no different. Therapist Suzi was whisked off earlier this year for a week long intensive [Comfort Zone] bootcamp where she learned everything from the experts. Since returning Suzi’s been offering a range of facials and body treatments in the salon. The beauty treatments are carried out in a private little beauty sanctuary within the back section which is used as overspill from the main salon but can also be privately booked for groups (I’m thinking a girly get together in there would be AMAZING!).
One very exciting difference here is that these treatments are what's known as 'urban' i.e. the focus is on the advanced skincare and product range so there's no need to get your kit off and listen to whale music, and what you do with your chakras is your own business. In fact, the client before me had specifically requested funky 80's music so anything goes!
I had two treatments. First up a nourishing foot treatment while my hair dye was working it’s magic. This quick and effective treatment uses disposable pads soaked in glycolic and lactic acid, followed by an intensive moisturising wrap which is left to work while you slip into heated, fleece lined, pedicure booties. This provided the perfect opportunity to indulge in one of the salon’s now infamous homemade brownies and a lychee martini (in the words of Jennifer Aniston, I’m worth it). Half an hour later and my feet were as soft as can be- and almost a week later, they still feel the same.
Next up I returned to experience the Hydramemory facial, which used [Comfort Zone] products specifically designed for sensitive skin. After a skincare consultation with Suzi she took me through the products and explained the process. I have a pretty good skincare routine already but as a mum of a one year old I’m so used to getting things done quickly I realised I never really take the time anymore to take proper care of my skin like I used to. Suzi worked her way through 9 different products in all, everything from a gentle peel to tonic, serum and moisturising masks. The Hydramemory facial is an intensive hydration treatment and it left me skin feeling plumped up, toned and balanced.
I should say that during my foot treatment I had chatted away with Suzi all way through- we managed to cover a wide range of topics. However when I returned for the facial it was at the end of a very busy, tiring day. The mark of a good therapist is someone who’s able to read your cues and it was lovely to just relax quietly during the facial.
I came round feeling like I’d been there for hours. If you know someone who deserves a little treat, or you want to treat yourself I’d highly recommend booking in for one of these experiences. You’re in safe hands, and you might even get to sample a homemade berries & prosecco ice lolly on a hot day ;o)
