Fancy taking your kids for a walk on the moon? Followed by a play amongst the stars in the galaxy?
Save the astronaut training as a new kid-friendly exhibit at Perth Museum & Art Gallery this spring promises to have local children floating above the Earth.
Opening on Tuesday, March 24, Blast Off! invites young families to enjoy learning through a specially-commissioned cosmic playscape where children and adults are encouraged to build, climb, dress up, read and space-walk together through the galaxy.
From giant murals of planets to interactive space play, the free installation put together by Culture Perth and Kinross (check them out on Facebook) alongside Scottish design studio Fun Makes Good, has been created to delight and inspire and allows youngsters to step out of a traditional museum setting and into ‘Space’ – with all the wonder that brings!
Gillian Findlay, Interim Head of Museums and Collections for Culture Perth and Kinross said the installation was designed firmly with children in mind.
Who didn’t want to be an astronaut when they were little?“Space and space travel are such exciting topics for children,” Gillian added. “Who didn’t want to be an astronaut when they were little? At Culture Perth and Kinross, we believe it’s important that the very youngest members of our community feel at home in their museum and we want their grown-ups to feel comfortable and equipped to play here freely with them too.
“The Museums team has loved every second working with Fun Makes Good (check them out on Facebook) to create a safe, sensory experience for toddlers and young children to enjoy, and we’re confident Easter 2020 will be out of this world as a result.”
Founded by Glasgow School of Art textiles graduate Eleanor Young in 2009, Fun Makes Good specialises in contemporary patchwork, producing gorgeously bold, bright designer-led interior products alongside larger bespoke pieces for commercial and public spaces. Clients range from the Barbican to Made.com
“As a big kid myself who loves play, it’s been a fantastic project to be involved in,” said Eleanor. “I’ve loved transforming the gallery spaces and hope everyone who comes to visit enjoys the playscape as much as I’ve enjoyed designing it.”
Blast Off! runs from 24 March until 31 May 2020 at Perth Museum & Art Gallery on George Street. Free admission.
