This address which seeks to explain why Loos was described as "The Unwanted Battle" and will focus on: the terrain; global events; interesting personalities who took part, one being the speaker's uncle; the role of Douglas Haig and the rapid expansion of the BEF. Much of the emphasis will be on the two Scottish Kitchener divisions which distinguished themselves in the main assault in the early part of the battle and on the failure of the Reserve.
